Matias Faldbakken (b. 1973, Hobro, Denmark) is a Norwegian artist and writer known for his incisive explorations of cultural, linguistic, and political structures. His practice spans visual art and literature, often employing strategies of negation, disruption, and symbolic deconstruction. In his visual works, Faldbakken manipulates everyday objects and industrial materials—such as garbage bags, cardboard boxes, and concrete—through minimal interventions that challenge conventional notions of function and representation. His approach reflects a tension between vandalism and erasure, aesthetic generosity and conceptual restraint.
Faldbakken lives and works in Oslo. He has held solo exhibitions at institutions including the Astrup Fearnley Museet (Oslo), Le Consortium (Dijon), Kunsthalle Fridericianum (Kassel), and Galerie Eva Presenhuber (Zurich). His work is included in the collections of the Centre Pompidou (Paris), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design (Oslo), and the Astrup Fearnley Museet (Oslo).
